Alcove by MadTree Review – Cincinnati, OH: The OTR Spot That Completely Won Us Over
We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.
Some of the best restaurant discoveries happen by accident, and Alcove by MadTree is proof of that. We’d actually had it on our radar for a while (it came up while we were researching OTR’s dining scene), but it took a nearby trip to City Flea at Washington Park to finally push us through the door. Since Alcove was within walking distance and brunch was calling, it felt like the obvious move.
I’m so glad we went.
From the moment we walked in, the vibe just got us, the decor, the atmosphere, the music playing in the background (yes, they were playing The Strokes and The 1975, and yes, it mattered). It felt elevated without being stuffy, the kind of place you want to linger in. One heads up though: the dining room was fully booked by the time we arrived, so we ended up at the bar. Totally fine, but worth keeping in mind and snagging a reservation ahead of time if you want a table.

✨ Ambiance

Alcove lives up to its name. The space feels like a little pocket of nature tucked into the middle of OTR, airy, green, and genuinely beautiful. The star of the show behind the bar is a massive living green wall that makes the whole room feel lush and alive. It’s the kind of decor that makes you want to take a hundred photos before your food even arrives.
The energy inside was that perfect mix of relaxed and buzzy, every table was full of people who just seemed genuinely happy to be there. Conversations were flowing, people were laughing, and there was this lovely communal feeling to the whole place. Nobody was rushing, nobody was staring at their phones. Just good food, good company, and good vibes.
We ended up at the bar since the dining room was fully booked, and honestly it worked out beautifully, great sightlines to that green wall, easy access to the drink menu, and the bartenders kept things moving without ever making you feel rushed. Just make sure you book the dining room ahead of time if you want a table, especially on weekends.
🍽️ Menu Highlights / What to Order
Let’s talk about the food, because it delivered across the board.
Don’t Miss
Steak & Eggs: The steak was cooked to a perfect medium, lightly seasoned, and genuinely tender in a way that felt almost effortless. The scrambled eggs were fluffy with just a slight softness to them. But honestly? The real star of the plate was the hashbrowns, and I use that word loosely, because these are not your average diner hashbrowns. Think fried mashed potato balls, crispy on the outside and pillowy on the inside. An absolutely unhinged (in the best way) side dish that I am still thinking about.

Stuffed French Toast: My partner ordered this and I immediately had food envy. It was rich and indulgent without being cloyingly sweet, which is a harder balance to strike than it sounds. A must-order for the brunch table.

Drinks
Spiked Coffee: Irish whiskey, amaretto, vanilla, and salted maple cream. Basically an espresso martini’s cozier, slightly more grown-up cousin. If you’re a fan of that genre of drink, this one is a no-brainer.

Lavender Lemonade Mocktail: Tart, refreshing, and genuinely special. What I loved most about this drink is that it didn’t feel like something was missing, it tasted like its own complete thing, not just a cocktail with the alcohol removed. The perfect spring drink.

On Our Radar for Next Time
The person sitting next to us at the bar had the espresso martini flight and it looked absolutely incredible. That is at the top of the list for our next visit.
⭐ The Experience
From start to finish, our visit to Alcove just felt easy, the kind of meal where everything clicks and you leave wondering why you waited so long to go.
Even though the dining room was fully booked and the place was packed, the food came out surprisingly quickly. No long waits, no awkward gaps between drinks and food, just a smooth, well-run brunch service that never once felt chaotic despite how busy it was.
The bartenders were a highlight in themselves. They were warm and attentive without being overbearing, took the time to walk us through the menu, and even shared a little about MadTree’s brewing background — which added a nice layer to the whole experience. It felt less like being served and more like being taken care of by someone who genuinely loved where they worked.
Sitting at the bar ended up being one of those happy accidents that you’re grateful for in hindsight. Front row seats to that gorgeous green wall, great conversation with the bartenders, and the kind of relaxed energy that made a weekend brunch feel like a proper occasion.
💡 Insider Tips
- Book the dining room in advance. Alcove fills up fast on weekends, we arrived to a fully booked dining room. The bar is a great backup but if you want a table, get on OpenTable ahead of time.
- Don’t sleep on the mocktail menu. The lavender lemonade mocktail was one of the best drinks at the table, it holds its own completely against the cocktail options.
- Get the espresso martini flight. We didn’t order it this time but watched someone at the bar enjoy it and immediately regretted our life choices. It’s on the list for next time.
- Parking is easy. Alcove has a connected lot, so no stressing about street parking in OTR.
- Go hungry. The portions are generous and nothing on the brunch menu is over $20, it’s genuinely great value for the quality.
