Most Cincinnati-focused travel guides get one thing completely wrong: they stop at the river. I learned that firsthand when I moved here and went on a mission to find a great local hibachi spot, and ended up at Nasu Japanese Steakhouse in Newport, which turned out to be better than the place I’d been missing back home. That was the moment I realized NKY had been hiding gems on me.
This is my ever-growing guide to the best restaurants in Northern Kentucky, the spots I keep coming back to and the ones I’d recommend to anyone crossing the bridge for the first time.
I update this regularly as I work my way through NKY’s dining scene. If your favorite spot isn’t here yet, it might just mean I haven’t made it there yet. Check back often, and drop a comment below if there’s somewhere you think I need to try!
How to Read This Guide
Each restaurant listing in this guide follows the same format: Restaurant Name – Neighborhood/City – Price Range – Short description. Here’s what the price ranges mean, based on an estimated full meal per person without drinks:
- $ – Under $15 per person
- $$ – $15–$30 per person
- $$$ – $30–$50 per person
- $$$$ – $50–$100 per person
- $ – $100+ per person
Prices are estimated and based on a full meal without drinks. Actual menu prices are subject to change, so treat these as rough guidelines only.

NKY Dining by Neighborhood
🏘️ Covington
Covington is the crown jewel of NKY dining. MainStrasse Village alone is worth an afternoon of wandering, it’s walkable, charming, and packed with independent restaurants and bars. The Pike Street corridor is another hotspot, with a mix of casual spots and more serious kitchens.
⚓ Newport
Newport has the riverfront views and an increasingly strong dining scene to match. The Monmouth Street area is the main drag, with a mix of old-school bars, newer restaurants, and the kind of neighborhood energy that makes you want to linger.
🏙️ Florence, Erlanger & the Suburbs
Florence and Erlanger don’t have the walkable urban feel of Covington or Newport, but they punch above their weight for suburban dining. This is where you’ll find spots like Four Mile Pig (Alexandria) and Miyako (Crescent Springs).
💎 Hidden Gems: Bellevue, Dayton & Fort Thomas
These smaller NKY cities are genuinely underserved by food coverage, which is exactly why they belong in this guide. Bellevue in particular has a tight-knit restaurant row that’s worth seeking out.
Exploring the Other Side of the River
If you’re visiting NKY, you’re probably spending time in Cincinnati too, and the Queen City’s restaurant scene is just as worth your time.

Planning Your NKY Dining Trip
Getting There from Cincinnati
Covington and Newport are a 5–10 minute drive from downtown Cincinnati across any of the bridges. Parking is generally easier and cheaper than downtown Cincinnati, one more reason to cross the river.
Best Areas to Base Your Eating
- MainStrasse Village, Covington – walkable, charming, best for a progressive dinner or bar hop
- Pike Street, Covington – mix of casual and upscale, great for a date night
- Monmouth Street, Newport – neighborhood feel, good variety, easy riverside access
Reservations
Most NKY spots are smaller and fill up quickly on weekends, especially the more popular Covington restaurants. Call ahead or check OpenTable/Resy where available. Many bar-forward spots are walk-in only.
Final Thoughts
Northern Kentucky doesn’t need Cincinnati’s permission to have a great food scene, and it doesn’t. It has its own identity, its own chefs, and its own neighborhoods worth exploring on their own terms.
This guide is my ongoing love letter to NKY dining, and it’s going to keep growing. If there’s a spot I’ve missed that you think belongs here, drop it in the comments, I’m always looking for my next great meal on this side of the river.
