⭐ Our Top Pick This Season

PNC Festival of Lights – Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden

If you only do one holiday lights experience in Cincinnati this season, make it the PNC Festival of Lights at the Cincinnati Zoo. Now in its 44th year, this is the one that sets the bar, five million LED lights strung across the entire zoo, 65 oversized animal lanterns, a Wild Lights show on Swan Lake, a blacklight puppet show, s’mores stations, Santa’s Village, and enough food options to justify calling it dinner. The best strategy: arrive early to see the animals before they head inside around 5pm, then stay for the lights. Weeknights in early December are noticeably less crowded than weekends, trust me on that one.

💡 Tips for Seeing Christmas Lights in Cincinnati + NKY

Best Times to Go

  • Weeknights are almost always less crowded than weekends, especially for popular ticketed events.
  • The week after Thanksgiving and the week before Christmas tend to be the busiest. If you can go in early December on a Tuesday or Wednesday, you’ll have a much better experience.
  • Many displays open at dusk, aim to arrive right at opening for the shortest waits.

Getting Around

  • For drive-through shows: keep snacks in the car, charge your phone before you go, and be patient — lines move slowly by design.
  • For walk-through events: dress in layers, wear comfortable shoes, and bring hand warmers. Even on nights that don’t seem that cold, standing around for an hour changes your mind fast.
  • Parking: most larger events have designated lots, check the event website before you go. NKY events in particular are often easier to park for than Cincinnati events.
