Sharing is caring!

Kanji OTR had been sitting on my restaurant list since the start of the year, one of those places I kept meaning to get to but never quite prioritized. Then, within the span of a few weeks, two different friends raved about it completely unprompted. That was all the nudge I needed.

My partner and I were already heading to Findlay Market one weekend, so we made Kanji our lunch stop, and honestly, I wish we hadn’t waited so long. The moment we walked in, I was struck by how open and airy the space felt. It just looked cool in a way that’s hard to put into words until you’re standing in it. Our server was incredibly kind and patient, which I needed, because the menu is genuinely exciting enough to cause a little happy overwhelm. Sushi rolls, Korean entrées, creative cocktails, this is not your average lunch spot.

🏮 Ambiance

Kanji’s interior is bright, airy, and effortlessly cool, the kind of space that feels minimalist but still has personality. Lush greenery (okay, fake plants, but done well) adds warmth without cluttering the vibe, and the overall aesthetic leans casual-trendy in a way that feels intentional without trying too hard. It’s the kind of place that just looks good, great for photos, great for lingering.

When we visited for lunch, the noise level was refreshingly low, easy conversation, no straining to hear each other across the table. The crowd was mostly groups of friends, which honestly tracks, this feels like exactly the kind of spot you text your people about and make plans around.

🍽️ Menu Highlights — What to Order

Kanji’s menu is the kind that makes you genuinely stressed in the best way, Korean entrées, creative cocktails, sushi rolls, and more, all sharing space on the same menu. We went the hot food route on our visit, and I have zero regrets.

Don’t Miss

  • Galbi — My partner ordered this and I kept stealing bites, which tells you everything you need to know. The meat was incredibly tender and packed with flavor, the kind of dish that makes you wish you’d ordered your own.
  • Garden Party Cocktail — Strawberry soju, Chamberyzette, vodka, lemon, simple syrup, and rhubarb bitters. I agreed to split one with my partner and immediately regretted it. Absolutely divine, order your own, don’t make my mistake.

Also Worth Ordering

  • Tempura Udon — A generous bowl loaded with tempura shrimp, fried tofu, and fish cakes — all of which were excellent. Fair warning: the broth leans into that deep, seaweedy flavor that’s classic for the style. If you love a traditional udon broth, you’ll be in heaven. If you’re newer to it, just know what you’re getting into.
  • Banchan & Rice — Entrées come with a cup of white rice and a shared spread of banchan. Don’t sleep on the pickled daikon and stir-fried eggplant, both were genuinely good and a nice touch that elevates the whole meal.

On Our Radar for Next Time

  • Seoul Wings — Spotted at the table next to us and immediately added to the must-try list.
  • Agedashi Tofu — Same story. Looked incredible. Next visit for sure!

Drinks

The cocktail program at Kanji is no afterthought. The Garden Party alone is reason enough to order a drink, and reason enough to order your own rather than share. Keep an eye on their daily drink specials (Tuesday through Friday) and check their website or Instagram before you go so you can plan accordingly.

⭐ The Experience

From start to finish, our visit to Kanji felt easy and unhurried in the best way. Our server was attentive and genuinely warm throughout, not just at the start, and the food came out at a pace that felt just right. The banchan arrived first, which ended up functioning perfectly as a little appetizer while we waited for our entrées. It’s a small thing, but it set a nice rhythm for the meal.

Portion-wise, Kanji is not messing around. Between the banchan, the white rice that comes with each entrée, and the dishes themselves, we were well and truly full by the end. Honestly? If you’re not starving, you could probably split the Galbi and still walk away satisfied, something I wish I’d known going in.

We were in and out in about an hour, which felt perfect for a weekend lunch stop. No wait when we arrived, which was a pleasant surprise for a spot that’s clearly generating buzz.

One practical heads up worth knowing before you go: there’s no street parking directly at Kanji. Your best bet is a nearby parking garage, we parked at the Findlay Market garage, which worked out perfectly since we were already planning to stop there.

💡 Insider Tips

  • Timing is everything — If you’re heading during peak hours, make a reservation to be safe. We stopped in around 2–3pm on a weekend and walked right in with no wait, so off-peak visits seem very manageable as a walk-in.
  • Park at Findlay Market — There’s no street parking at Kanji, so plan ahead. The Findlay Market parking garage nearby is your best bet, and hey — make a morning of it and hit the market while you’re at it.
  • Check the specials before you go — Kanji runs daily drink specials Tuesday through Friday, and they also offer half price sushi. Check their website or Instagram before your visit so you can plan your order around whatever’s on that day.
  • Great for dates and group hangs — The vibe works beautifully for both. Casual enough to feel relaxed, cool enough to impress.
  • Order your own cocktail. I cannot stress this enough. I made the mistake of splitting the Garden Party with my partner and spent the rest of the meal thinking about the sips I didn’t get. Learn from me. Order your own. 🍹

🏆 Bottom Line

  • The Verdict: Kanji OTR absolutely lives up to the hype — and then some. The food is creative and satisfying, the service is warm, the vibe is immaculate, and the cocktails are dangerous enough that you’ll want your own. Do not sleep on this one.
  • Would You Go Back? Yes — without question.
  • Best For: Casual lunch, a low-key date, or a fun hang with friends
  • Price Point: $$ — Great value for what you get
