Somehow I’ve lived in the Cincinnati area since 2018 and have never made it to Taste of Cincinnati. That changes this year. When I found out Gym Class Heroes was headlining Friday night, I didn’t need much more convincing.
Taste of Cincinnati is no small thing. It’s been running since 1979, which makes it the nation’s longest-running culinary festival, and this year it’s taking over Fifth Street in Downtown Cincinnati for four days over Memorial Day Weekend (May 22–25). We’re talking dozens of food vendors, live music across three stages, craft beer, cocktails, and the kind of chaotic, delicious energy that only a city-wide food festival can deliver.
I’m going in fresh, no prior Taste experience, no idea what to expect, and I figured that made this the perfect moment to put together a first-timer’s guide. Here’s everything you need to know before you go.

What’s It All About
Taste of Cincinnati is exactly what it sounds like, a massive, multi-day celebration of food, drink, and live music right in the heart of Downtown Cincinnati. What makes it stand out from your average street festival is the sheer scale of it. We’re talking over 50 food and beverage vendors, three separate live music stages running simultaneously, and a judged competition where vendors compete for the best dish in various categories. This isn’t a casual farmers market situation, it’s a full-blown event.
The festival has been a Cincinnati tradition since 1979, which means it’s been feeding this city for longer than most of us have been alive. There’s something kind of wonderful about that, generations of Cincinnatians have made this a Memorial Day Weekend staple, and this year a whole new crop of first-timers (hi, that’s us) gets to find out what all the fuss is about.
The food vendor lineup this year is genuinely impressive in its variety. You’ve got Cincinnati classics like LaRosa’s, Izzy’s, Schmidt’s of German Village, and Pompilio’s sitting alongside more adventurous options like Lasang Pinoy Filipino Eats, Mama Afrique Nigerian Cuisine, Red Sesame Korean BBQ, and Fusako Japanese Street Fusion. Whether you want to stick to familiar favorites or eat your way around the world in an afternoon, Taste of Cincinnati has you covered.
What to Expect
Think of Taste of Cincinnati as one long, delicious afternoon (or evening) of grazing. The vibe is festive and energetic, Downtown Cincinnati’s Fifth Street transforms into a sprawling outdoor festival with food stalls lining the street, music spilling out from three different stages, and thousands of fellow food lovers doing exactly what you’re doing: wandering, sampling, and figuring out what to eat next.
The Food
This is obviously the main event. With over 50 vendors, the strategy is less “sit down for a meal” and more “try a little of everything.” Portions at food festivals like this tend to be snack-sized, which is actually perfect, it means you can work your way through multiple vendors without committing to a full plate right out of the gate. Come hungry, pace yourself, and don’t fill up on the first thing that catches your eye (easier said than done when Funnel Cake Island is right there).
The Music
Entertainment runs across three stages, the Main Stage, the Food Truck Zone Stage, and the Findlay Market Stage, so there’s always something happening no matter where you are on the festival grounds. Friday’s Main Stage headliner is Gym Class Heroes at 8:30 PM, which is the highlight of the weekend as far as we’re concerned. If you’re going Friday, plan to be in position early.
The Competition
One of the cooler elements of Taste of Cincinnati is the judged vendor competition, the Best of Taste awards, where dishes are judged across different categories. Keep an eye out for signage at vendor booths calling out their award-winning or competing dishes. It’s a fun way to narrow down your choices when you’re standing in front of 50 options and your brain short-circuits.
The Drinks
The beverage lineup is no afterthought either. Local craft breweries, including Rhinegeist, MadTree, Braxton, Fifty West, Fretboard, Sonder, and Grainworks, are all represented, plus options from Anheuser-Busch, Molson Coors, Ole Smoky, and a rotating lineup of cocktails, margaritas, lemonade, boba, and smoothies. Basically, you won’t go thirsty.
Insider Tips
- Go early or go late — avoid the midday rush. Saturday and Sunday from noon to 3 PM are going to be peak crowd hours. If you’re going on a weekend day, aim to arrive right at 11 AM or plan for an evening visit instead. Friday’s later start (4 PM) naturally staggers the crowd a bit.
- Wear comfortable shoes. You’re going to be on your feet and walking a lot. This is not the occasion for new sneakers or cute sandals you haven’t broken in yet.
- Bring cash AND a card. Most vendors will take cards, but cash can speed things up when lines get long. Having both gives you options.
- Eat strategically. With 50+ vendors it’s tempting to grab the first thing you see. Do a quick lap first to scope out what’s available before you commit. You’ll thank yourself later when you spot the Filipino eats or the Nigerian cuisine and still have room.
- Reserve parking in advance. Downtown Cincinnati on a holiday weekend fills up fast. The Taste of Cincinnati website has a direct link to reserve a spot at nearby garages, worth doing ahead of time so you’re not circling the block.
- Plan around Gym Class Heroes if that’s your thing. They hit the Main Stage at 8:30 PM on Friday. Arrive early enough to get a good spot, and maybe eat first so you’re not juggling food in the crowd.
- Layer up for Friday evening. May evenings in Cincinnati can get cool, especially once the sun goes down. A light jacket thrown in your bag is never a bad idea.
